Child readers, are they born or made? The reader is not born, it is made and parents have a fundamental role that should not be delegated exclusively to the school. The school has a responsibility for the learning process not centered on the pleasure of reading; this, like many hobbies, must be fed from home, within the family.

1. Parents are a fundamental reference, the fundamental reference for their children, who to a large extent tend to imitate what their parents do. In families where parents are good readers, reading is part of life: there is a library, parents spend some time available to read, talk about books, comment on what they are reading at all times ... It is easier than Children naturally tend to approach reading as engaging, satisfying entertainment.

2. In the case of non-readers or poor readers, the goal of getting your children to read is just as possible… with a little more work from the parents. Surely they are not going to become readers for your child to be, but they can show an interest in being read and what they read. They can go with their child to a bookstore with a wide collection of children's and young people's literature, browse with the child some books, pay attention to what the child is looking at ...

3. The public libraries and school libraries are a good source for borrowing books and magazines with the advice of the professionals in charge of these centers.

4. If there is a short story, a novel, a ccomic that has remained as a pleasant memory From childhood in the parents' mind, you can talk about that experience and give it value in the eyes of the child.

5. And, something definitive: take time for shared reading, in the case of children who still cannot read or who are learning and tire easily. The adult is the intermediary between the story that the book or magazine offers the child. It is the voice and it is the assistant when, after reading for a while alone, the child gets tired.

6. In the case of children who already know how to read, the father, mother, can take an interest in what you are reading, ask him relaxed, to share his impressions. Of course, without turning that interest into a boring and uncomfortable questioning for the child.

Two ideas that can never be lost sight of in this desire of parents, readers or not, to get their children to read and enjoy reading:

1. Reading is a pleasure, not a tedious obligation.

2. There will always be a book or magazine that reaches the heart of the child. You have to discover her, taking into account her age, her character and her tastes.

To begin with, something fundamental: reading brings pleasure, creative avoidance, intelligent and active entertainment, knowledge of the world and knowledge of others. And this is just the beginning!

In addition, by reading, a child strengthens his capacity for concentration and attention. He also practices mechanical reading (the union of letters and syllables to form words and words to form sentences) and comprehensive reading, that is, the essential relationship of a word with a meaning.

All this has a direct impact on their school performance: a child who reads well studies better and, consequently, obtains better academic results. So reading plays a fundamental role in school success.

A child who reads has a broader perspective on things. Reading both fosters and feeds their curiosity and it presents you with so many possibilities for each situation that it makes you more flexible, more creative, more supportive, more understanding with others… There are many good human qualities that develop better with reading.

When a child becomes fond of reading from a young age and becomes a true reader, he achieves a triumph: reading is a faithful friend that will accompany him throughout his life. In low moments, in difficult circumstances, reading will be a private haven in which to find comfort, relief, and advice.
